"This upscale establishment is worth a stop just to see the beautiful renovation of its 1843-vintage coral-block school house. Owned by Bergman & Sons , it has an excellent selection of black pearls, either loose or in exquisite settings designed and produced in the atelier behind the store. You'll also find high-quality handicrafts here, including woodcarvings, marvelous tivaevae quilts, and exquisite rito hats. One section is devoted to paintings and other works by local artists."

"this large store next to Westpac Bank has been Rarotonga's best place to shop for handicrafts since 1943. It has the island's largest selection -- including pieces from other parts of the South Pacific -- and a wide choice of carved wooden Tangaroa tikis in various sizes. You can even buy a 9-karat gold pendant of the well-endowed god. The shop carries some black pearls, some set as pendants and earrings."

"Cook Islander Paka Worthington attended American University in Washington, D.C. He obviously stopped at the shops owned by his friends Ron Hall on Moorea and Steve Fearon on Bora Bora, for these two outlets bear a lot of similarities with those fine stores. Specialties here are tension-set designs (where tension instead of a hole secures the pearl in place) and enhancers, which let you clip the pearl and setting on any chain, or even a white pearl necklace"

"The vendor stalls in this waterfront municipal market are the best places to look for tie-dyed bedspreads and tablecloths. You can also find good prices on T-shirts, (buy a size larger than you usually wear). Saturday morning is market day here -- the best time to shop."

"Check out Ellena Tavioni's workshop for one of the island's best selections of block-printed swimwear, sundresses, and other items for men, women, and children. Ellena pioneered block printing here, and she exports her clothing to the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, and the high-end boutiques in Fiji. Here she has Rarotonga's best selection in this lovely style. Her workshop can alter items for free or make them for you from scratch."
