(9th - 14th)	»	Independence Day (Unaine) - Public Holiday For Kiribati the biggest event of the year falls in on the early month July.  The whole of Kiribati will celebrate this National Day to commemorate self-independence from the British Colonial rule on the 12th July 1979. The bulk of the event is celebrated in the capital of Kiribati in Bairiki on South Tarawa.  The whole week will also be preoccupied with the following events - outrigger sailing canoe race, coconut spa the canoe model race, kite flight competition, traditional dance competition, Miss Kiribati 2012 pageant, and singing and Karaoke competition. Other sporting events such as traditional & western wrestling, boxing, power lifting, weight lifting, soccer, basketball, touch rugby, volley ball, ping pong, badminton, tennis, marathon and taekwondo.
