New Zealand Tourism Research Institute

The New Zealand Tourism Research Institute (NZTRI) is a non-profit institute that provides innovative research of value to industry, community, and policy-makers. Our focus is on helping to develop a profitable and sustainable industry, which provides tangible benefits for business, residents, and visitors.

We currently have a number of projects underway in New Zealand and overseas. One of our core objectives is to use this research to fund graduate studies and post-graduate students. Professor Simon Milne (AUT) is the head of NZTRI.

what do we do?

* We find ways to enable communities to get the most out of tourism.
* We strengthen tourism industry performance by providing information and expertise.
* We help New Zealand to benefit from the Knowledge Economy.
* We find ways to develop sustainable tourism.

What projects do we undertake?

Currently we are conducting research on the value of urban parks within Auckland City. From this, the NZTRI is developing a model of urban park use and planning. We are also conducting research for the Travel Agents Association of New Zealand to look at the impact of ICTs on the travel sector in New Zealand. We also have a research project underway for the Ski Areas Association of New Zealand looking at the economic impact of the ski area at Mt Ruapehu on the surrounding communities. More information is available from our current projects section.

How can we help you?

Research: into ways that tourism can benefit the economy.

Advice: on the impacts of tourism on society, the economy and culture.

Webraising: so that locals have a say on how their part of the world is presented.

Reports: which we have produced are available free on this site.

Mentoring: tourism business in the private sector.

Where are we?

The NZTRI is based at the Auckland University of Technology and has members at the University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, Waiariki Institute of Technology, McGill University, the University of Derby, and a number of other academic institutions. The NZTRI also has close links to industry, government and international agencies. See the contact us section for more information and a map.

What can we do for you?

We obtain funding from both the private and public sectors, which can support high-end graduate study in areas of vital importance to tourism development. We currently have six PhD students studying through the NZTRI and we are looking for more. See our interns section for more information on how the NZTRI could help you with your studies
