"Operated by Sailing Safaris, this open-air restaurant beside the harbor is the most popular place in Neiafu for breakfast, sandwiches, burgers, salads, pizzas, and dinner choices including grilled lobster, steaks, and fish (check the specials board for today's catch). For lunch try the lobster salad. The Mermaid usually packs in local expatriates and passing yachties, especially during happy hour from 4 to 7pm."

"Swiss chef Gunter Schnell came here to cook at the Paradise International Hotel, married a local girl, settled down, and opened this little restaurant in the backyard of their home opposite the Catholic church. You won't have a water view here. Gunter should have named it "The Dancing Lobster," for he's very good with fresh tropical lobsters. They're best whole with garlic butter, but he also dices them for salads or stir-fries."

"Australian Trevor Gregory sailed to Ha'apai on a yacht and liked it so much he returned to open the town's only restaurant. A tin roof covers the wooden chairs and white plastic tables. There's nothing fancy here -- burgers, curries, steaks, chops, stir fries, and fish and chips -- but the company's friendly and informative."

"A knock-off of Friends Cafe in Nuku'alofa, this local version of Starbucks has a great view of Port of Refuge from its patio out back. Coffees, teas, juices, pastries, sandwiches, small pizzas, quiches, and salads are on the menu. The meal-size bowl of mildly spicy Thai-style noodle soup will keep you going. You can check your e-mail here, but you can't smoke, even outside on the patio."
